Quake 3 PR 1.30 is out!
|
Well the final point release for quake 3 has been released. One of the highlights of this release is that they have now managed to acheive 5:1 ratio compression for network traffic so internet games will feel alot better for modemers as well as others.

Demon FFA Server problems
|
Some of you may be aware of the recent connection problems connecting to the Demon FFA servers faced by the many players who play there. Here is an email I have written to the administrator of those servers to perhaps shine some light on the problem. Hopefully the problem will be resolved soon.

recently, for about two weeks now, I have found consistent, periodic instances when connection to the servers have been interrupted. sometimes this equates to half the players on the server pinging 999 to all the players pinging 999. I have uploaded a screeenshot highlighting this. The url is http://www.geocities.com/jeevan1976uk/pingadvantage.jpg Having spoken to the other players who use your servers, they also have faced the same problems.
I very much enjoy playing on these servers because I ping so well to them and I know that many others share my views on this matter.
I was wondering if you were aware of this problem and if you could perhaps let me know when the problem should be resolved, so that I may relay this information to the other players through my clan website, www.elitekillers.com

GTV 3.0
|
Despite the fact it's still in testing, GTV 3.0 has been released. A couple of the new features worth noting are the ability to record demo's off GTV and the ability to remove teamchat from demo's, something requested by various Online Leagues.

There is no confirmation as such but the rumour's indicate that XSR wont be reopening. Even more interesting is esportaddicts.com, a domain registered very recently by Sujoy which appears to be BarrysWorld hosted.

Quake Cup Warmup
|
In approach to our welcome (for us, not everone else) return to bwdml, we are taking part in a brief cup organised by the good peeps over at wz.
On a similiar note it is good to see EK getting regular games for practice and a number of strong players. Its during these games, even if they aren't going to plan, that we're learning to play as a team. For a long time in previous barrysworld seasons our squad was limited resulting in hardly any practice, and a great deal of pressure on those who played. Because of this reliance, a bad day/week for one player meant a bad week for the clan. At least now we have enough to sub and coach with our clan of isdner's [sic].

Update on stuff

Well Monday 24th, 10:26, and EK are currently playing a friendly against MR, which should have been our third match of the evening. We were due to play QDC (www.qdc.it) who, as far as we could tell, are a group of italian isdn'ers. Clanbase ladder matches are nearly always difficult to arrange, although eventually some kind of a game emerges. Tonight wasnt helped by the fact that QDC were even unwilling to use the same version of quake 3. Luckily the patience of our members held out long enough for a clanbase admin to call that QDC had 7 days to get the correct version of quake. In the freezetag ladder things were much more simple since in the whole of europe there were only two servers which could have been made use of for the games.
From my point of view there are two features of tonight's hassle which concern me more than anything else. Firstly, that QDC are ranked first in the ladder and therefore should represent the best of the clans taking part. Secondly, I was more than a little disturbed by the photos they flaunt on their website. I've seen some pretty nasty stuff on the Stile Project, but this makes me feel unwell.
We will have to see in 7 days whether QDC conceed to the rules of clanbase and manage to play us on a suitable server.

Revenge?
|
I don't think there is anyone around who are not yet aware of the horrific disaster which occured in New York on Tuesday.
Today in America, everyone lit a candle in memory of those killed in the incident. At the same time, as America prepares to go to War, I cannot help but think if the angry american public opinion is going to force the american government to act hastily and bomb Afganistan or any other middle eastern country which it believes to be harbouring terrorists, killing many innocent lives to add to the innocent lives already lost in New York...
I hope in the coming days the guilty party can be correctly identifed and brought to fair justice without the loss of any further innocent lives. I must admit watching some american Senator stating that if a country adopts a government which is not suitable for america then America should go in and change the government? such arrogance is amusing.

Q3 PaintBall mod released
|
PlanetQuake informs us about the imminent release of the Quake3 Paintball mod. This mod should prove to be a lot of fun and might give a form of distraction from the more serious mods out there.
The mod should be released tonight at 8 pm EST (which means anywhere between midnight and 1 o'clock CET). We'll try to get the files as soon as possible for you to download, which may be be a hassle since this mod is anticipated to seriously cripple the bandwidth of the host. Alternatively you can always try to download the mod from the Q3Paintball site.

SAS has written up a quite comprehensive guide for newbie gamers over at Barrysworld. As usual he goes through all the difficult stuff in laymans terms....which is great for the less proficient of gamers.
Having recently spoken to a freelance reporter who said that online gaming is great but it can seem daunting to some new users, it's great to see anything that encourages new people to play more games online. It would be nicer to see more people play Quake 3 as their first game rather than CounterStrike too.
I know a lot of the "oldies" started off on an iD game (or Duke), and with Urban Terror being so good, there really isn't any excuses. (/end of rant).
