Penn State Driver Permit and DSL Service
|
Today I called PENNDOT (Pennsylvania department of transportation) to find out what I neededto do to get a PA Driver Permit.
This is how the conversation went...
Woman : how can i help you today sir?
Me : I have recently arrived from the UK and wanted to know how to aquire a PA driver Permit
Woman : Well sir, you will need to complete a physical examination with a doctor and complete a learner's examination test. You will need to provide a check to cover admin charges and also proof of ID and address. If you pass the test, need to complete a driving examination which lasts 15 minutes within 1 year.
Me : What sort of examination is the learner's test?
Woman : I don't know about the UK sir, but I would advise you to visit a PENNDOT office and pick up a PA Driver's manual and STUDY! (the word study was seriously stressed).
Me : Gosh, is the exam very difficult
Woman : Well sir people are very disappointed when they fail.
I went to their website and downloaded the PA driver's manual which featured an example question from the Learner Permit exam.
Apparently there are 18 questions and you have to get 15 of them correct to pass. The sample question they provide was
In which state are you taking this exam? 1. Florida 2. Pennsylvania 3. Texas 4. California
hmmm..... People have been known to fail....
Yesterday I called to set up DSL service for my apartement. At the end of the conversation the girl says (all calls are recorded and monitored by management incase customers try to sue the company for bad service etc. - I found this out later);
Girl : Sir, my goal today was to provide you with outstanding service and satisfy you. Have I suceeded in my goal?
Me: Erm.. yes?
Girl : Thank you sir for calling Verizon DSL and being a valued Verizon customer.
Me : ah Ha - (CLICK! she has now hung up) -ng on... did you say satisfy?
I expect to have DSL service active on April 18th 2001.

yesterday I found myself attending a business presentation for a pyramid money making scheme. I felt like I was tricked into attending really, I wasn't told it would be a business presentation. I was fully aware of pyramid schemes beforehand and had looked into the maths behind it when I was at school.
It seems like the whole of America want residual income *sigh*. The art of making money is to find someone more stupid than yourself so you can making him work and give you a percentage of his/her earnings. The consultancy firm I work for does this in a similar way, charging clients anything between 100-300 dollars per hour for work I do.
The business presentation was about trying to sell e-commerce business to people who don't really know anything about the internet. You paid about 300 dollars to join and did ALL of your shopping from one particualar shop - part of your joining fee was paid as commision to the person who invited you and subsecuently any people you "con" into joining would pay you a percentage of the joining fee and also the person who invited you. Thing is, I would have needed to find someone stupid enough to believe that ALL his shopping could be done from this one particular site and thus join aswell.
After the presentation, some of the ladies did some demonstrations of the products that were on sale - some of the products were completely pointless but the other people who were trying to make you join kept "ooing" and "ahhing" which was really annoying but reminded me of those 1 hour long american adds promising to cure baldness etc.
I left the presentation as soon as I could without offending anyone - I shall not be attending another ;-)

Retro Quake Communities
|
Have gone without quake3 for well over a month now and suffering from the 1 month itch, I downloaded quake 1 shareware again and after getting the full version from a shady character online, I discovered I could connect to quake 1 servers online after work, despite the strict firewall in place! Playing on a laptop is tricky especially the aiming part witha touch pad, but practice may help in that department. I may invest in a mouse.
Not really expecting there to be too many people playing the game, I was quite surprised to find there to still be a thriving net quake community. http://www.division1.net/ is an example of the people still playing the game. (Their links page contain Quake 1 servers I hope to frequent until I get my new computer built)
Now that I am reasonably settled in, look for updates to my personal column. Before I go, here is some free publicity for my brother's shareware quake 3 clan. http://www.wildxanimals.homestead.com - I have yet to figure out if it's a joke or if he's actually serious about. Last one is his "money spinning project" http://www.student-night.net/ Currently looks like a banner heaven site. He would like constructive comments to improve his site so leave him a message if you have time. Check out my updates soon.
