What is the world coming to?
|
Well as many of you know, the big fuss in the Quake 3 scene at the moment is that the CPL made a fairly stunning announcement, stating that the World Championship Event scheduled for December has been changed from a Quake 3 event, to a Counter-Strike event. [ShackES, E-Sports] following the predictable course of 'Quake 3 is dead' etc [much in the same way that the end of Barrysworld would have spent the end of Quake 3]. Well we may as well all pack up Quake 3 and either change to CS or quit completely... what utter crap.
So far this year there have been 9 major Quake 3 tournements [ref:Chris Defends the CPL's Decision http://www.challenge-us.com/]. Reno in his column argues a few points about the 'nay-sayers'.
In the meantime we also see World Cyber Games announcing the '1st World Cyber Games (WCG)' (due to take place in Dec).
A number of people are also putting great emphasis on Doom 3 as taking the place of Quake 3, although very few of the Quake 3 players will actually be able to play the game at a reasonable speed by the sounds of things. Such an expectation on this game can't be healthy, especially on a game which seems primarily to be being written for single player.
So the CS community get a share of the money and attention for a while, many agree the game is dull to watch (with the exception of Athena's 14 March 2001 update which is a bit iffy). Most of the game seems to consist of waiting around for something to happen.
With Barrysworld being rescued from liquidation and around 140 clans now taking part in (*The All New Improved*) league, you can hardly argue that the UK q3 scene is dying off.
As was commented on XSR by a representative from Battletop: '80 percent of the people that buy the game suck. they play bots. the other 10 percent play online and download demos of the greats..these people lan and play for fun. 5 percent is in the competative scene on irc. 3 percent are in competative teams..1 percent of people above them can win things, and 1 percent above THEM lay people like c3,z4,laker,fatality,czm etc.'[sic]. The number of Quake 3 players that the CPL affects is neglible.
Coming from the Netquake scene (and ZX Spectrum) I have heard this all before. Indeed the grass often looks greener elsewhere, but the existence of one gaming community doesn't mean that all others are 'dead'. The key issue here is something which hasn't been mentioned anywhere else. The fact is most people are only now just capable of competiting online with Quake 3 due to 1. The increasing availability of broadband connections and 2. The increasing number of people with powerful PC's.

Clan Wars Week 1 (again)
|
Default win this week which is a shame as we had a lot of EK on the server ready for action. The maps were going to be cpm9 and dm12 which we have had limited experience on so would have been fun. On another note we played RD with one of the worst setups since, erm, maybe the KIL game in bw season 3.. will have to play them again soon :)

Demo of the Week: 10 Mar 2001 (XSR)
|
'Demo of the week, is a new feature on XS Reality that we publish every Saturday.' 'This has to be one of the best Quake 3 Arena demos of all time, both players performing to the best of their abilities resulting in a tight, action packed game. It really is an amazing win for czm, from being 13 to 2 down against one of the world's best Quake3 Arena players known for his Q3tourney4 skills, and known even better for his railgun skills. Good game both players.'Download (864 kb) Download it and find out who it is :)
